The All Progressives Congress (APC) has selected Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State election. This move effectively assigns the slot to the Badagry Division.

The party also confirmed Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hamzat as its governorship candidate. Together, both names now complete the APC ticket for the election.

Party leaders describe the decision as a strategic balance designed to strengthen APC support in Lagos West, especially in Badagry.

In addition, the party wants to improve unity across divisions and aims to secure wider electoral support ahead of 2027.

Sources within the party say the selection reflects internal negotiations and responds to political pressure from stakeholders in the region.

Badagry leaders have long demanded stronger representation in Lagos politics. Traditional rulers and community stakeholders led these calls.

In March, royal fathers formally urged the APC to zone the governorship ticket to Badagry. They made this appeal during a press briefing addressed by Dr. Oba Olalekan Sejuro Ogungbe James.

According to them, the region has faced political marginalization. Therefore, they argued that zoning would correct this imbalance.

Meanwhile, APC insiders say the deputy governorship slot became a compromise option. This followed sustained agitation from Badagry stakeholders.

One source explained that the party also considered gender balance. Initially, the ticket featured two male candidates, which raised concerns.

Consequently, the leadership adjusted the structure to reflect a male-female pairing.

Another source added that pressure from Badagry played a key role in the final decision.

Previously, Dr. Samuel Ajose from Badagry joined the governorship race. However, he later stepped down in support of Hamzat.

As a result, internal consensus around the ticket became easier to build. Observers say this development influenced final negotiations within the party.

Ultimately, the APC says the ticket reflects inclusion and political balance. It also positions the party for a stronger performance in the 2027 election.

Furthermore, party leaders believe the arrangement will reduce internal tension. They expect it to strengthen support across Lagos State.
