United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Professor Rabia Sa’id of Bayero University Kano to serve on a 21-member international scientific panel tasked with studying the physical effects and societal consequences of nuclear war.
According to a statement by Bayero University, the appointment was made under UN General Assembly Resolution 79/238, placing the Nigerian atmospheric physicist among a select group of leading global experts assessing the risks posed by nuclear conflict.
The panel is expected to submit its findings in 2027, with the report aimed at guiding international efforts on nuclear risk reduction, global security, disarmament, and humanitarian protection.
Professor Sa’id, a native of Wangara in Kano State, obtained her Bachelor of Science, Master’s, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Physics from Bayero University, Kano. She later earned a second Master’s degree in Environment and Development from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom through a Ford Foundation Fellowship.
She made history as one of the first two female academics appointed to the Department of Physics at Bayero University, breaking long-standing gender barriers and inspiring more Nigerian women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Over the years, Professor Sa’id has built a distinguished career in atmospheric physics, space weather, electronics, and particle physics. Her research has also focused on developing practical environmental solutions.
Among her notable innovations is the development of environmentally friendly fuel briquettes produced from carpentry waste, an initiative designed to reduce dependence on firewood and help curb deforestation.
She also spearheaded low-cost air quality monitoring projects that integrate ground-based sensor networks with satellite observations to strengthen environmental monitoring and climate research.
Her appointment to the UN scientific panel is widely regarded as a significant recognition of Nigeria’s growing contribution to global scientific research and international policy development on critical security and humanitarian issues.
The development also underscores the increasing role of Nigerian scientists in shaping international responses to some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including nuclear safety, environmental sustainability, and global peace.
