President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and U.S. President Donald J. Trump are expected to hold high-level talks in the coming days to address growing tensions over security concerns in Nigeria, the Presidency has confirmed.

According to Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, the meeting is being arranged to strengthen cooperation and clarify recent statements by the U.S. administration designating Nigeria as “a country of particular concern” over alleged persecution of Christians.

Bwala said discussions could take place either at the Presidential Villa in Abuja or at the White House in Washington, depending on final diplomatic arrangements.

He emphasized that despite differing narratives, both countries continue to enjoy a strong bilateral relationship, particularly in defense cooperation. “President Trump has in the past supported Nigeria through authorized arms sales, which have been effectively deployed in counter-terrorism operations with significant results,” Bwala noted.

The presidential aide explained that the talks will also focus on correcting misconceptions that terrorist activities in Nigeria are faith-targeted. “The truth is that these acts of violence affect citizens across all faiths and regions,” he said, adding that the Tinubu administration remains committed to protecting the rights and safety of every Nigerian.

President Tinubu recently reaffirmed that Nigeria stands as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty, stressing that the country “opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”

The upcoming diplomatic engagement is expected to reinforce shared commitments to regional stability, counterterrorism, and economic cooperation between Africa’s largest democracy and the United States.

Further details regarding the date and venue of the meeting are expected to be made public soon.
