Members of Nigeria’s National Assembly have proceeded on another short recess after resuming from a 68-day break.
The federal lawmakers reconvened on Tuesday but adjourned plenary sittings until October 13, 2026, after considering legislative and fiscal matters.
The National Assembly had commenced its 2026 annual recess on Thursday, July 23, following the conclusion of plenary proceedings.
The Senate had initially scheduled its resumption for September 15 but later extended the recess to September 29 to allow for repairs to the sound systems in both chambers.
Upon resumption on Tuesday, lawmakers approved a further adjournment to October 13.
In the Senate, the decision followed deliberations on Nigeria’s security situation and preparations for an upcoming National Security Summit.
The summit is expected to bring together lawmakers, service chiefs, security agencies and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for addressing intelligence gaps and territorial security concerns across the country.
The October 13 resumption date is expected to coincide with the conclusion of the summit.
The House of Representatives also adjourned after considering key fiscal measures, including the extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget.
A lawmaker who spoke with our correspondent said both chambers are expected to resume full legislative activities and committee assignments when they reconvene in mid-October.
The latest adjournment means lawmakers will spend only a short period in plenary before proceeding into the next phase of legislative activities, including committee work and consideration of pending national issues.
