A graduate of the University of Maiduguri, Fatima Yerima Askira, has launched Otech Microfinance Bank, expanding her years of work in social development, peacebuilding, and education.

Askira, who is the founder and managing director/chief executive officer of the new financial institution, unveiled the bank as part of efforts to provide financial services to underserved women and small businesses across Nigeria.

The launch marks another milestone in Askira’s 12-year journey of building initiatives focused on social justice, community development, and education. Before establishing Otech Microfinance Bank, she founded Better Orientation for Women and National Development Initiative (BOWDI) and Fayasschool.

Speaking at the launch, Askira said her mission has always been centred on creating institutions that make a positive impact on society.

“From UNIMAID lecture halls to building institutions that serve people, the goal has always been impact,” she said.

Otech Microfinance Bank will focus on improving access to financial services for low-income earners, particularly women entrepreneurs and small business owners who often face challenges accessing traditional banking services.

Microfinance banks in Nigeria operate under the regulation of the Central Bank of Nigeria, with a mandate to provide financial support to individuals and businesses that are underserved by conventional banks.

The establishment of Otech Microfinance Bank adds Askira to the growing list of graduates of the University of Maiduguri who are leading institutions and driving development initiatives across Nigeria.

The new bank is expected to contribute to financial inclusion efforts by providing opportunities for entrepreneurs and supporting economic empowerment among vulnerable groups.
