Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has called for greater investment in Nigeria’s film and creative industries, saying movies can play a significant role in reshaping the values and outlook of young people.
Sani made the remarks during an exclusive interview with S24 TV in Kaduna, where he spoke on the role of culture and creative content in societal development.
According to the former lawmaker, films and movies are important tools for societal reorientation, particularly at a time when young people increasingly consume visual entertainment.
“Films and movies are important components in societal reorientation. Today, young people are watching movies and films more than they pray,” Sani said.
He argued that rather than viewing the popularity of films among young Nigerians solely as a source of concern, the government and stakeholders should harness the industry to promote positive values and inspire the younger generation.
“We can use films and movies to inspire young people in the society,” he added.
Sani also called for greater recognition of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy as a strategic institution in national development.
He argued that the Ministry of Culture should receive the same level of priority accorded to key sectors such as health, education and finance.
“The Ministry of Culture should also be a priority like the Ministry of Health, Education and Finance,” he said.
The former senator’s comments highlight the growing debate over the role of Nigeria’s creative industry in shaping public attitudes, preserving cultural values and influencing young people.
Nigeria has one of the world’s largest film industries, with Nollywood producing content consumed by audiences across Africa and beyond. Sani’s position suggests that the industry could be deployed more deliberately as an instrument of social education, civic awareness and youth development.
He maintained that creative productions can serve not only as entertainment but also as platforms for communicating values, inspiring ambition and encouraging responsible behaviour among young Nigerians.
