President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, as Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence I of the All Progressives Congress, APC, 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.
The appointment is part of the council’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the APC Presidential Campaign Council brings together political leaders, strategists and grassroots mobilisers to coordinate the party’s campaign activities.
Matawalle’s role will focus on security coordination for campaign activities across the country.
As Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence I, he will oversee the security architecture for campaign events and help ensure the safety of candidates, campaign officials and supporters.
He will also work with security agencies on intelligence gathering, threat analysis and risk assessment to identify and mitigate potential security threats during campaign operations.
The minister will further coordinate with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and women’s groups to strengthen security arrangements and stakeholder engagement.
The ministry said Matawalle’s appointment reflects President Tinubu’s confidence in his experience in public service, security management and political mobilisation.
Matawalle, a former governor of Zamfara State, previously managed security challenges in the state and implemented community-based peace initiatives.
As Minister of State for Defence, he has also supported the administration’s security agenda through engagements with security agencies, policy implementation and advocacy for troops’ welfare and infrastructure.
Reacting to the appointment, Matawalle thanked President Tinubu and the APC leadership for the confidence placed in him.
He pledged to deploy his experience as a former governor, serving minister and political leader towards ensuring a peaceful, coordinated and successful campaign.
He said the campaign would focus on taking the achievements of the Renewed Hope administration to communities across Nigeria.
The Ministry of Defence also congratulated Matawalle on the appointment and pledged its support for his new national assignment.
