Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have repelled an attempted terrorist attack on a military base in Kasuwan Daji, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing several attackers and rescuing nine abducted civilians.
The operation, however, claimed the lives of one Nigerian Army officer and one police officer, while two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries during the fierce exchange of fire.
According to the Nigerian Army, the attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, when terrorists attempted to infiltrate the Forward Operating Base (FOB) under the cover of darkness.
Troops on duty detected the movement early and responded with coordinated firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Following the initial engagement, reinforcements arrived and launched a pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted several residents from the surrounding community during the attack.
The Army said the operation led to the successful rescue of nine kidnapped civilians, while troops continued exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ casualties and secure the area.
Despite the success, the military confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer were killed in action.
Two soldiers also suffered gunshot wounds and were evacuated by air for advanced medical treatment. The Army said both personnel are in stable condition.
In a statement, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, dismissed reports circulating on social media that six security personnel were killed.
He clarified that only one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives during the operation.
The Army described the failed attack as another major setback for terrorist groups operating in the North-West, saying the operation demonstrated the growing effectiveness of ongoing military offensives against armed groups in the region.
According to the statement, sustained military pressure has significantly reduced the ability of terrorists to launch coordinated attacks, weakening their operational capacity and morale.
The Army added that troops have continued to dominate the area and remain on the offensive to protect vulnerable communities and dismantle terrorist networks across the North-West.
It reiterated that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to restoring lasting peace and security in Zamfara and other parts of the region.
