Residents of Randagi Community in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State have accused security personnel of killing several residents, injuring others and subjecting members of the community to harassment during an operation they said took place while security operatives escorted a miner into the area.
Families who spoke in an described the incident as one that has left the community grieving and fearful, calling on the Federal Government, the Kaduna State Government and security authorities to launch an independent investigation into what they say happened.
One bereaved woman said her son died after sustaining a gunshot wound during the operation, fighting back tears, she described the loss as devastating and appealed to the authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable if the allegations are confirmed.
Another father also recounted that his son was shot and killed during the incident, he said the tragedy had left his family heartbroken and urged security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
A third resident made a similar claim, saying his son also lost his life after being shot, according to him, the family has struggled to come to terms with the incident and hopes the government will ensure justice is served.
Several other residents claimed that people sustained gunshot wounds and other injuries during the operation and also alleged that some members of the community were intimidated, assaulted and harassed.
Among those interviewed was a man receiving treatment for a gunshot wound, he said he was on his way to the mosque for prayers when he noticed military personnel arriving in the community in several vehicles.
According to him, gunshots rang out shortly after the security convoy entered Randagi, he said he remained inside the mosque until the shooting appeared to subside before attempting to leave the area.
The survivor said that while running for safety, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his hand and later realised he had been struck by a bullet after noticing blood flowing from the wound.
Residents further claimed that the operation involved personnel they identified as soldiers, officers of the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL) and members of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVIS). According to them, the security personnel were escorting a miner into the community when the incident occurred.
The community has appealed for an independent and transparent investigation into the allegations, call for justice for families who said they lost loved ones, as well as medical assistance and compensation for those who sustained injuries.
Many residents said the incident has heightened fear within the community and weakened public confidence and also urged authorities to reassure residents by ensuring accountability and taking steps to prevent a recurrence.
