Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has said that only God can ultimately bring an end to Nigeria’s prolonged insecurity challenges, urging Nigerians to support security agencies and pray for peace.
Matawalle made the statement in an interview with BBC Hausa, amid renewed attacks involving killings and abductions in parts of the country.
Nigeria has recently witnessed a rise in security incidents, including attacks in Oyo State and Borno State between May 15 and 17.
Reports indicated that gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting 39 students and seven teachers. In Borno State, armed groups reportedly invaded schools in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area, and kidnapped 42 pupils.
Matawalle described insecurity as a national challenge that requires cooperation between security forces and citizens.
“It’s disheartening, and we must all rise to ensure that security agencies and Nigerians work together to end insecurity in the country. Insecurity does not discriminate based on political affiliation or religion. It can affect anyone,” he said.
The minister also cautioned opposition politicians against using insecurity as a political tool, accusing some individuals of attempting to portray the government as incapable of addressing the crisis.
He said insecurity should not be exploited for political advantage, stressing that all Nigerians have a stake in restoring peace.
“It is only God that can bring to an end to this insecurity, alongside our collective prayers and efforts. It should not be used as a tool to condemn others or score political points,” Matawalle added.
The minister further accused some individuals of circulating old and misleading videos on social media to create the impression that recent attacks occurred under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
“There are fake and recycled videos being circulated, some dating back to the Jonathan administration and others from countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, yet they are being presented as incidents that occurred under this administration. That is not true,” he said.
Matawalle assured Nigerians that security operatives were working continuously to tackle terrorism and other criminal activities across the country.
He acknowledged that insecurity cannot be eliminated overnight, noting that several countries around the world have faced prolonged security challenges.
“Our security operatives are working tirelessly across the country. We have directed them to deal decisively with terrorists, but this is not a challenge that can disappear overnight,” he said.
He appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting security efforts and remain committed to the pursuit of peace and stability.
