Africa wants a stronger voice in global digital decision-making. Nigeria says the continent can achieve this by working together and speaking with one voice on key telecommunications issues.
The Federal Government made the appeal during the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference Preparatory Committee in Abuja. The event brought together telecom regulators, policymakers and industry experts from across Africa.
The meeting focused on preparing African countries for major international conferences that will shape the future of global telecommunications and digital governance.
The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, represented the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy at the event.
He urged African countries to strengthen cooperation and build technical capacity. He said countries must develop common positions before attending global meetings. According to him, this strategy will give Africa greater influence during international negotiations.
Maida added that strong preparation and quality contributions matter more than sending large delegations. He encouraged governments to invest in skilled professionals who can represent the continent effectively.
The Abuja meeting will help African countries agree on shared positions before the African Telecommunications Union conference and the 2026 International Telecommunication Union meetings.
Delegates will discuss digital governance, spectrum management, cybersecurity, emerging technologies and universal digital access. These issues will shape the future of telecommunications across the world.
Experts believe stronger African participation can improve digital infrastructure and expand internet access across the continent. It can also attract investment, encourage innovation and ensure global telecom policies reflect Africa’s interests.
