Nigeria and Somalia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during a diplomatic meeting held at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria in Abuja.
The meeting, which involved the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, and the Somali Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Osman Mohamed, focused on security cooperation, economic development, and migration management.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa and Ahmed stated that “Nigeria is committed to supporting Somalia’s ongoing efforts towards stabilisation, institutional strengthening and national development, with full respect for its sovereignty.”
The Somali Ambassador, Mohamed Osman Mohamed, called for deeper collaboration between both countries, especially in addressing shared security threats.
He said, “There is a need for structured mechanisms to address shared security challenges such as terrorism and transnational crime, while also promoting cultural exchange, technology transfer and investment.”
He also briefed the Nigerian side on Somalia’s security situation and appreciated Nigeria’s continued support as well as international efforts aimed at safeguarding Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Both sides further discussed cooperation in maritime security, anti-piracy operations, agriculture, mining, digital technology, and fintech, with emphasis on job creation for young people. Ahmed also reiterated that “Nigeria is ready to collaborate in key areas such as maritime security, anti-piracy initiatives and manpower development.”
Co Both countries also stressed the importance of safe and orderly migration policies across Africa.
