Vice President Kashim Shettima has cautioned aspirants within the All Progressives Congress (APC) against actions that could destabilise the party if they lose in the forthcoming primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded message titled “2027: Don’t pull down the roof,” Shettima emphasised that political ambition must not override party cohesion, urging contestants to remain committed to the collective interest of the party regardless of the outcome of internal contests.
He noted that while aspirants may come from different camps with varying interests and expectations, they all belong to “one political household” and must resist attempts by external forces or internal actors to create division. According to him, political manipulation and rumours are often deployed to incite distrust among party members and weaken unity ahead of elections.
The Vice President stressed that losing a primary election should not be interpreted as injustice but rather as part of the democratic process, where only one candidate can emerge. He described the ability to manage disappointment as a key test of political maturity, stating that true leadership is revealed in moments of defeat, not victory.
Addressing concerns around endorsements, Shettima acknowledged that party leaders and stakeholders naturally express preferences but warned that such support must not translate into intimidation or exclusion. He called for transparent processes, fairness, and respect for all aspirants to maintain the credibility of the party’s internal democracy.
He further urged party leaders to ensure that delegates act freely without coercion and that grievances are handled with patience and justice. According to him, unresolved disputes and internal tensions, if ignored, could weaken the party ahead of the general elections.
Shettima also reminded aspirants that politics is a long-term journey, encouraging those who may lose to remain loyal and patient, noting that today’s setback could become tomorrow’s opportunity.
Concluding his appeal, he called on all party stakeholders to prioritise unity, discipline, and collective responsibility, warning that internal conflicts could undermine the APC’s strength if not properly managed.
