FIFA Confirms Iran Will Stay in Tournament

FIFA has rejected a proposal to replace Iran with Italy at the upcoming World Cup. The governing body confirmed that Iran will remain in the competition despite political pressure.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has already made the position clear. He stated that Iran will take part in the tournament as planned.

Controversial Swap Proposal

The debate started after US special envoy Paolo Zampolli suggested that Italy should replace Iran. He said he had discussed the idea with Donald Trump and FIFA officials.

Zampolli argued that Italy’s football history makes them worthy of a place. He pointed to their four World Cup titles.

FIFA did not accept the suggestion. The organization gave no official support for any change.

Political Backlash Over the Idea

Iran strongly criticized the proposal. The Iranian embassy called it “moral bankruptcy” from the United States.

It also defended its national team. Officials said qualification must happen on the pitch, not through politics.

Italy and Officials Reject the Idea

Italian officials also dismissed the proposal.

Economy minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called it “shameful.” Sports minister Andrea Abodi said the idea is not possible and not fair. He stressed that teams must qualify through results.

Italian Olympic Committee president Luciano Buonfiglio also rejected the suggestion. He said Italy must earn its place in competition.

World Cup Qualification Remains Unchanged

Italy failed to qualify for the tournament after losing a play-off match to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This marks a third straight World Cup absence for the four-time champions.

Iran has qualified and is scheduled to play its group matches in the United States. Their fixtures include games against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.

FIFA Rules Stay the Same

FIFA rules give the organization full control if a team withdraws or is removed. However, Iran has not been excluded.

As a result, no changes will be made to the tournament lineup.
