The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has inducted 84 new veterinary doctors during its 36th Attestation and Oath-taking Ceremony held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre.
The ceremony became even more remarkable as Dr. Umar Faruq emerged as the star of the day by winning 12 academic awards. He also received the Dean’s Prize for Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele praised the graduates for completing the tough six-year programme. He said their success showed discipline, hard work, and the university’s strong commitment to quality training.
He also revealed that the university recently received an anonymous donation that helped the Veterinary Teaching Hospital install a digital X-ray machine and automated surgical tables.
Professor Mele assured students and staff that the university is working on major renovations, especially in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, to improve learning and working conditions.
Dr. ThankGod E. Onyiche, the Sub-Dean of the faculty, administered the professional oath and officially welcomed the graduates into the profession. He encouraged them to maintain high standards and compete confidently on the global stage.
Representing the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Professor Halima Idrisa Gambo described the induction as a serious responsibility. She urged the new doctors to protect animal health, human health, and the environment through the One Health approach.
Dean of the Faculty, Professor Mohammed Ahmed Umar, also spoke on the faculty’s international growth. He said the school now has lecturers with global experience and has secured research support through TETFund.
He advised the new graduates to continue learning and play active roles in fighting animal diseases and improving food security in Nigeria.
