Adeniyi Urges Discipline as Bayelsa Wrestling Classics Begin

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has called on athletes to uphold discipline and professionalism as the 14th Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics commenced in Yenagoa.

Adeniyi, who also serves as President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, made the call at the opening ceremony held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex.

He described the tournament as a key platform for discovering and nurturing wrestling talents across Nigeria.

According to him, the event represents a strategic investment in the country’s sporting future.

Adeniyi emphasised the importance of grassroots development in sustaining success in wrestling.

He noted that structured youth programmes are being strengthened to identify and develop young talents early.

He also highlighted the inclusion of wrestling in the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) as a major step toward expanding the talent pool.

The Customs boss referenced Nigeria’s participation in the West African Wrestling Championship.

He said the exposure has helped athletes and officials gain valuable experience.

Adeniyi added that such regional engagements are crucial to improving performance at higher levels.

He announced that all registered participants will receive an allowance of ₦25,000 each.

He also disclosed that prize money for medal winners has been increased.

Participating teams are also receiving logistical support.

Adeniyi urged athletes to compete fairly and avoid practices that could undermine the integrity of the sport.

He stressed that discipline remains critical to both individual success and the reputation of wrestling.

He commended Douye Diri for supporting the development of wrestling.

The tournament, which began on March 25, is scheduled to run until April 1, 2026.
