Christopher Maikalangu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship contest, has won his own polling unit by a commanding margin in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections held on Saturday.

At Polling Unit 004 in Garki Village 2, where he cast his vote earlier in the day, Mr Maikalangu garnered 229 votes, far ahead of his rivals. Paul Ogidi of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) managed 15 votes, while Onyebuchi Chukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) received just one vote.

Mr Maikalangu is one of two incumbent council chairmen seeking a second term under the APC banner. The other is Abubakar Abdullahi of Abaji Area Council. There are six area councils in the FCT.

Before counting began, prominent figures including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Bunkure, visited the unit, which is located within Mr Maikalangu’s family compound.

After voting, Mr Maikalangu described the electoral process as smooth and efficient, saying he completed accreditation and casting his ballot in under three minutes and was impressed by turnout at his unit.

According to official figures, 252 voters were accredited and voted at the unit out of 2,287 registered in the location. Meanwhile, other units in AMAC reported delayed starts, low turnout, and some technical issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), prompting officials to rely on facial recognition for voter verification in places.
