The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room on Monday marched to the National Assembly to defend Nigeria’s electoral integrity and democratic future.
The protest, organised in collaboration with Motion Nigeria and concerned citizens, followed the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
According to the group, the bill threatens key gains in electoral transparency, accountability, and public trust in the voting process.

Specifically, the Situation Room said the bill does not reflect the will of Nigerian citizens.
Therefore, protesters demanded mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
They also called for the restoration of the 360-day election notice period, which they described as critical for credible elections.
Furthermore, the group warned that removing these provisions could enable manipulation and undermine voters’ confidence.
As a result, the Situation Room urged the National Assembly’s Conference Committee to retain the progressive provisions earlier agreed by the Joint Committees.
At this stage, the group said lawmakers must demonstrate statesmanship by acting in the national interest.
Meanwhile, the protesters stressed that Nigeria’s democracy cannot thrive on secrecy, shortened timelines, or legislative regression.
They argued that the electoral process must guarantee transparency, predictability, and credible outcomes.
Consequently, the group called on lawmakers to listen to citizens and protect reforms that safeguard the integrity of the ballot.
The protest ended with renewed calls for electoral accountability under the hashtags #ProtectTheVote and #ElectronicTransmissionNow.
