Legal practitioner Barrister Zainab Mukhtar Ruma has urged Nigerians to look beyond political parties and instead vote for candidates with proven integrity, competence, and a track record of service ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She made the call while appearing as a guest on Political Arena, a public affairs programme on S24 Television Abuja, where she discussed the growing threat of hate speech and fake news amid Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking on the importance of informed electoral choices, Ruma said Nigeria’s future depends on citizens electing leaders based on their character, achievements, and capacity to deliver, rather than party affiliation.
According to her, political parties should not be the determining factor in choosing leaders, as competent and credible individuals can emerge from any political platform.
“If Nigerians begin to vote beyond political parties and instead assess candidates based on their records, integrity, and ability to improve people’s lives, the country will make significant progress,” she said.
She stressed that a candidate’s track record should remain one of the most important considerations during elections, noting that past performance often provides a reliable indication of future leadership.
Ruma maintained that electing leaders solely because of party loyalty has not always produced the desired results, urging voters to critically examine the achievements, competence, and vision of every aspirant before casting their ballots.
She added that accountability in governance can only improve when citizens prioritize merit over political sentiments.
The legal practitioner also expressed concern over the increasing spread of hate speech and fake news, warning that misinformation continues to fuel tension, deepen divisions, and worsen the country’s security challenges.
She urged Nigerians, particularly social media users, to verify information before sharing it, warning that false narratives have the potential to incite violence and undermine national unity.
Ruma further cautioned citizens against misunderstanding the constitutional right to freedom of expression.
While acknowledging that Nigerians have the right to express their opinions, she warned that such freedom comes with legal and moral responsibilities.
“There is no absolute freedom after speech,” she said, explaining that individuals can be held accountable when their statements violate the law, defame others, incite violence, or threaten public peace.
She called on citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public engagements, especially online, where unverified information spreads rapidly.
According to her, responsible communication is essential in strengthening democracy, protecting national security, and promoting peaceful coexistence.
Ruma concluded by encouraging Nigerians to become more active and responsible participants in the democratic process by scrutinizing candidates beyond party labels and rejecting divisive narratives capable of threatening national stability.
She emphasized that informed voting, responsible speech, and accountability remain critical ingredients for building a more peaceful, united, and prosperous Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
