A governorship aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Bauchi State, Sadique Baba Abubakar, has called on Nigerian youths to actively contest for legislative and other political offices, stressing that meaningful national transformation cannot occur without their direct participation.
The retired Air Marshal, who is seeking the Bauchi governorship seat, made the appeal during a political engagement in the state, where he emphasized the need for young people to move beyond political apathy and become key actors in governance.
Abubakar argued that while youths often express dissatisfaction with leadership outcomes, real change requires them to step into the arena, contest elections, and influence policy decisions from within the system.
His remarks have drawn attention among scholars and analysts, particularly within the field of Political Science. Many political scientists describe the statement as an urgent and necessary call, noting that Nigeria’s democratic consolidation depends heavily on youth inclusion and generational transition in leadership.
Analysts further contend that the country’s large youth population represents both an opportunity and a risk. Without structured political engagement, they warn, the demographic advantage could translate into increased frustration and instability. Conversely, active participation could drive reforms, innovation, and accountability in governance.
The call aligns with ongoing national conversations about youth representation in politics, as younger Nigerians continue to demand greater inclusion in decision-making processes.
Observers say the challenge now lies not just in rhetoric, but in creating enabling conditions such as reducing the cost of elections, strengthening institutions, and ensuring internal party democracy—to allow more youths to contest and win political offices.
Abubakar concluded by urging young Nigerians to “endeavour and try,” insisting that the future of the country ultimately rests in their willingness to take responsibility within the political system.
