Veteran VOA Journalist Ashaka Dies After Prolonged Illness

A former Hausa Service correspondent of Voice of America, Saleh Shehu Ashaka, has passed away after a prolonged illness.

Family sources confirmed that the veteran journalist died on Sunday following a period of persistent health challenges.

The late Ashaka had earlier travelled to Cairo, Egypt, for medical treatment. However, his condition reportedly worsened, leading to his admission in an intensive care unit where he later died.

Ashaka, who spent decades in journalism, was widely known for his work with VOA Hausa, serving as one of its correspondents in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.

His contributions to broadcasting earned him recognition among colleagues and audiences alike.

He is survived by two wives and a child.

Tributes have continued to pour in from family members, colleagues, and associates on social media platforms.
Among those who expressed condolences are former Minister of Communications, Isa Ali Pantami, and presidential media aide Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.

Colleagues remember him as a committed journalist whose career spanned several decades, leaving a lasting imprint on Hausa broadcasting.
