Spain delivered a strong statement ahead of the FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Peru in their final warm-up match on Monday.
The reigning European champions were without teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who is recovering from injury, but still proved too strong for a Peru side that failed to qualify for the tournament.
Spain made the perfect start in Puebla, Mexico, taking the lead after just two minutes. Mikel Oyarzabal fired a stunning effort into the top corner from outside the penalty area to put Luis de la Fuente’s men ahead.
The Spaniards continued to dominate and doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute through Pedri. The Barcelona midfielder finished off a well-worked move to give Spain a deserved 2-0 lead before the break.
Eight minutes into the second half, Spain extended their lead to three goals when Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese accidentally turned a cross into his own net while attempting to deal with the delivery.
Peru managed to pull one back in the 66th minute through Jairo Velez, but it was little more than a consolation as Spain comfortably saw out the match in front of a crowd of 46,000 spectators.
Spain will now turn their attention to the World Cup, where they open their campaign against Cape Verde on June 15. Yamal and fellow winger Nico Williams are both expected to be available for the tournament opener as Spain aim to add a world title to their recent European success.
