Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has warned that senior government officials could become targets of terrorists and bandits if Nigeria’s security challenges continue to worsen.
Buratai made the statement while reacting to the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar. The incident has sparked concern across the country. Furthermore, it has renewed discussions about the growing threat posed by criminal groups.
According to Buratai, the successful attack on a retired senior military officer should serve as a warning to political leaders and security agencies. He cautioned that ministers, senators, governors, and other prominent Nigerians could face similar threats if urgent action is not taken.
Nigeria continues to battle banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes. As a result, many communities have experienced fear, displacement, and disruption to daily life.
Meanwhile, citizens remain concerned about their safety and security. Many people have called for stronger measures to protect lives and property. In addition, security experts have urged the government to adopt more effective strategies to tackle the crisis.
Buratai noted that criminal groups appear to be becoming more organized. Consequently, they are able to carry out attacks with greater confidence. He therefore stressed the need for preventive measures rather than reactive responses.
The former army chief urged security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering. Moreover, he called for better cooperation among security institutions. According to him, improved coordination would help identify threats early and prevent attacks.
He also urged authorities to target individuals who finance or support criminal activities. By disrupting these networks, the government can weaken criminal groups and reduce violence.
Buratai expressed hope that the death of General Rabe would prompt meaningful reforms. He said the government must take decisive steps to strengthen national security and restore public confidence.
Furthermore, he emphasized that protecting citizens should remain a top priority. Sustained efforts, he added, are necessary to restore peace and stability across the country.
As insecurity remains a serious concern, many Nigerians are looking to the government for action. Ultimately, they hope stronger security measures will improve public safety and rebuild confidence in the nation’s security system.
