The Lagos NLC demands N225,000 minimum wage call took centre stage during the International Workers’ Day celebration in Lagos.
The Nigeria Labour Congress in the state urged the government to raise workers’ pay from N85,000 to N225,000 due to rising living costs.
State NLC Chairperson Funmi Sessi made the demand at Mobolaji Johnson Arena. She said inflation and economic pressure have reduced the value of the current wage. According to her, workers now struggle to meet basic needs such as food, housing, and transport.
Sessi acknowledged efforts by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu but said the existing wage is no longer enough. She also raised concerns about insecurity and poverty.
She noted that these issues affect productivity and workers’ welfare across the state.
In response, the Lagos State Government announced a temporary relief. Represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, the governor approved a N50,000 wage award for May. He said the measure aims to ease the burden caused by rising fuel prices and inflation.
Sanwo-Olu praised workers for their role in the state’s growth. He described them as the backbone of Lagos’ economy. He also highlighted ongoing investments in housing and transport.
These projects aim to reduce commuting stress and improve living conditions.
The Lagos NLC demands N225,000 minimum wage position reflects wider concerns about economic hardship. Labour leaders say better wages, stronger security, and improved policies will support workers. They believe these steps will promote stability and economic growth.
