Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89. His death ends a 35-year reign and marks the beginning of a new era under his son, King Haakon VIII.

The Norwegian Royal Court confirmed that the King died at 6:35 a.m. local time after a period of deteriorating health. He had recently been hospitalised with a serious bacterial bloodstream infection.

News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief across Norway. Large crowds gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo, where people left flowers and sang the national anthem as they waited for updates about the monarch’s condition.

The atmosphere around the palace shifted from concern over the King’s health to national mourning following confirmation of his death.

King Harald’s 35 Years on the Norwegian Throne

King Harald became King of Norway in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. He went on to become Europe’s oldest living monarch and one of the continent’s longest-serving heads of state.

During his reign, Harald helped modernise the Norwegian monarchy while maintaining a close connection with the public.

His 1968 marriage to Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, was considered a departure from traditional royal expectations. Sonja later became Queen Sonja when Harald ascended the throne.

The King also became particularly associated with his role as a unifying national figure during periods of crisis.

A Monarch Remembered for His Response to Tragedy

King Harald’s public response to the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway became an important part of his legacy.

His speeches and public appearances during periods of national grief helped reinforce his image as a compassionate and unifying figure.

Tributes following his death have highlighted his humility, warmth and commitment to Norway, with political leaders and members of European royal families recognising his role in bringing people together.

King Harald’s Final Health Crisis

The King’s final days were marked by serious health concerns.

The Norwegian Royal Court said earlier in August that Harald had developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream and was receiving antibiotics. His condition later deteriorated and was described as very serious.

He died at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet on Friday morning.

Haakon Becomes King of Norway

Following Harald’s death, the Norwegian throne passed immediately to his son, Crown Prince Haakon.

Haakon has taken the name King Haakon VIII, beginning a new chapter for Norway’s constitutional monarchy. He arrived at the Royal Palace on Friday with his wife, Queen Mette-Marit.

Norway’s succession system provides for the throne to pass through direct descent. Crown Prince Haakon had been first in line to succeed his father, followed by his daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

Ingrid Alexandra is now Crown Princess and the heir apparent.

A New Era for Norway’s Monarchy

King Haakon VIII inherits the throne at a significant moment for the Norwegian monarchy.

His immediate challenge will be to preserve the public confidence and sense of national unity associated with his father’s long reign while guiding the institution into a new generation.

Norway is expected to observe a period of national mourning following Harald’s death, with funeral ceremonies to come.

For millions of Norwegians, however, the immediate focus remains on remembering the King who served the country for more than three decades.

Flowers, candles and messages of condolence have begun appearing around the Royal Palace as citizens pay tribute to Harald.

King Harald V’s death closes one of the longest chapters in modern Norwegian royal history. After 35 years on the throne, his departure marks not only the loss of a monarch but also a generational transition as Norway welcomes King Haakon VIII.
