The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports mixed changes in the prices of tomatoes, beans, garri, onions, ginger, and other food items in April 2026.
In its Selected Food Prices Watch report released in Abuja, the NBS shows that the average price of 1kg of tomatoes rose by 6.60%, from N1,104.85 in March to N1,177.92 in April. However, it records an 8.23% drop compared to April 2025.
Similarly, the price of brown beans rose by 0.99% to N1,338.93 in April 2026, while it fell by 44.89% compared to April 2025. White garri increased by 0.93% to N808.96, but it declined by 39.86% year-on-year.
Onions rose by 0.98% to N1,164.39 in April 2026, while it fell by 22.56% compared to the previous year. Fresh ginger increased by 0.73% to N5,581.82 and climbed by 12.30% year-on-year. Palm oil rose slightly by 0.12% to N2,396.32 and recorded a 4.77% annual increase.
Across states, Bayelsa records the highest price of tomatoes at N1,600.73, while Plateau records the lowest at N730.48. Oyo records the highest price of brown beans at N1,938.91, while Taraba records the lowest at N750.
Abia records the highest prices for white garri and onions, while Plateau and Kwara record the lowest prices respectively. Ekiti records the highest price of palm oil at N2,819.09, while Abia records the lowest at N2,024.41.
By region, the South-South and South-East record the highest prices for most food items, while the North-West and North-East record lower prices. The NBS attributes the differences to supply patterns and market conditions across regions.
