**Nafisa Sparks Outcry Over Marriage as Prison Remark**

Kannywood actress Nafisa Abdullahi has triggered widespread controversy after describing marriage as “like being in prison” for many women, while accusing some men of entering marriage for selfish and exploitative reasons.

In a 6-minute, 10-second viral video, the actress argued that women often lose their individuality after marriage, claiming that “your identity even fades away” once they become wives. She said many men, in her view, marry not for companionship or religious reasons, but to gain domestic service, insisting that some treat wives as “someone to cook, clean, and work for them.”

She questioned the structure of marriage itself, asking why women should accept roles that leave them feeling subjugated. According to her, many husbands impose strict control over their wives’ movements and decisions, creating what she described as a restrictive environment where autonomy is significantly reduced.

Abdullahi also alleged that domestic abuse is common in some marriages, citing scenarios where women are allegedly beaten, denied financial support, or forced into household duties even after violent incidents. She argued that such experiences contradict the idea of marriage as a safe or beneficial institution for women.

Responding to the argument that marriage is primarily for children and legacy, she dismissed it as insufficient justification, insisting that women already have families who love them and support systems outside marriage. She maintained that participation in marriage should be a personal choice rather than a societal obligation.

The actress further blamed cultural conditioning for pressuring women into marriage, saying many are raised to believe it is the ultimate achievement in life. She argued this mindset contributes to what she described as widespread unhappiness among married women.

Her remarks have since divided public opinion online. While some social media users have praised her for speaking openly about women’s experiences in marriage, others have criticised her statements as overly generalised and discouraging of marital life.
