French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Russian hybrid attacks against Europe are growing more intense.
He said France has seen a rise in hostile activities in recent weeks. Macron spoke on Friday after meeting political party leaders in Paris.
He said France must prepare for new threats linked to Russia. He also called for stronger action to protect the country and its allies.
Macron said the French government would prepare a plan to protect key infrastructure from drone and cyberattacks. The plan will also cover important sites in France’s defence and technology sectors.
He said these sites could face attacks that fall below the level of open warfare. France wants to improve its ability to detect and respond to such threats. The country also plans to strengthen its fight against foreign interference.
European countries use the term hybrid attacks for several types of hostile action. These can include cyberattacks, sabotage, false information campaigns and attacks on key infrastructure.
European governments have also raised concerns about drone activity and threats to undersea cables. Several countries have reported incidents that they link to wider Russian efforts. Moscow has denied many Western claims about its role in such activities.
Macron also linked the growing security concerns to the war in Ukraine. He said France would continue to support Ukraine despite the pressure from Russia. He added that Russian actions would not change France’s position.
France has supported efforts to strengthen European security since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Macron said Europe must remain alert as the nature of the threat continues to change.
The French warning comes as European governments increase security around important sites and networks. Many countries now focus on threats that do not involve traditional military attacks.
