Abdurraheem Almuft Yelwa has spoken about the journey, challenges and stages he went through before representing Nigeria at an international Qur’an recitation competition in Dubai, as well as how he emerged winner of a Qur’an competition among students in Saudi Arabia.
Yelwa, who has received widespread recognition following his success in international Qur’an competitions, said his achievements were the result of years of learning, memorisation, practice and participation in various competitions.
Speaking about his journey with Radio France International in Lagos, Yelwa explained that representing Nigeria at an international level did not happen overnight. He had to go through several stages of Qur’an memorisation, recitation, correction, training and competitions before reaching the international stage.
According to him, Qur’an competitions require more than simply memorising verses. Contestants must demonstrate strong recitation skills, knowledge of Tajweed, accuracy, confidence and the ability to recall verses correctly under pressure.
Yelwa also explained how he secured the opportunity to participate in a Qur’an competition among students in Saudi Arabia, where he competed against other talented Qur’an reciters.
His efforts eventually paid off as he emerged first in the competition, an achievement that attracted attention and praise from Nigerians and the wider Qur’an-learning community.
Following his success in Saudi Arabia, Yelwa went on to represent Nigeria at an international Qur’an competition in Dubai, marking another major milestone in his journey.
His story demonstrates that success in Qur’an competitions requires dedication, discipline, consistent revision, guidance from qualified teachers and the determination to compete at increasingly higher levels.
