Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania, securing maximum points and early momentum in Group C.

The result, though not without its tense moments, underlined Nigeria’s pedigree and ability to manage pressure in a tricky tournament opener.

The Super Eagles took control early, imposing their superior quality and tempo on the game, with their dominance, Nigeria’s effort paid off with two well-taken goals that gave Nigeria a firm grip on proceedings and appeared to put the contest beyond Tanzania’s reach.

Tanzania, however, refused to fold as the Taifa Stars grew into the game and were rewarded with a goal that briefly shifted the momentum and tested Nigeria’s defensive resolve. The push forced the Super Eagles to dig deep, relying on experience and game management to see out the result.

For head coach Eric Chelle, the victory provides a solid foundation rather than a finished statement.

While the three points ease early pressure, the narrow scoreline highlighted areas, particularly concentration and defensive organization that will require refinement as the group stage progresses.

With this opening win, Nigeria move confidently into the rest of Group C, knowing tougher challenges lie ahead.

The 2–1 triumph over Tanzania may not have been flawless, but in tournament football, a winning start often matters more than perfection.
