Former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed concern over recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

Kwankwaso, in a statement issued on Sunday, described Trump’s pronouncements as troubling, warning that such rhetoric could further strain relations between both nations.

He stressed that Nigeria remains a sovereign country dealing with complex security challenges caused by outlaws across different regions — challenges which, he said, “do not discriminate on the basis of religion, ethnicity, or political belief.”

“The United States should assist Nigerian authorities with advanced technology to combat insecurity rather than issue threats that could deepen division in our country,” Kwankwaso said.

The former Defence Minister urged the Nigerian government to appoint special envoys from among its seasoned diplomats to engage Washington, while also calling for the immediate posting of permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests globally.

Kwankwaso further appealed to Nigerians to remain united, describing the period as “an important moment to emphasise unity of belonging over division.”

“God bless Nigeria,” he concluded.
