NEMA DG Zubaida Umar Honoured as Disaster Risk Reduction Ambassador

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has been honoured with the Disaster Risk Reduction Ambassador Award by the Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies (CDRMDS) of the University of Port Harcourt.

The award was presented to her at NEMA Headquarters in Abuja by the Director of the Centre, Professor Mbee Daniel Mbee, in recognition of her exemplary leadership and the Agency’s sustained commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness, mitigation, and youth engagement across the country.

Professor Mbee commended Mrs. Umar for aligning NEMA’s operations with global best practices, noting that her leadership has advanced proactive approaches to disaster management. He cited the Agency’s achievements in early warning dissemination, community sensitization, and strategic planning as indicators of its growing impact in reducing disaster risks nationwide.

Responding, Mrs. Umar expressed appreciation to the University of Port Harcourt and the CDRMDS for the recognition, describing the award as an inspiration for NEMA to further deepen collaboration with academic and research institutions in promoting evidence-based disaster management.

She reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to building a culture of preparedness, inclusiveness, and resilience through strategic partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for effective emergency response.
