Local vigilantes and community security groups have reportedly repelled a major bandit attack in Birnin Tudu, Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The three-day confrontation involved the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and air support from Operation Fansan Yamma.

According to a report by security publication Zagazola Makama, more than 30 suspected bandits were reportedly killed during the clashes. However, security authorities have not independently confirmed the casualty figure.

The confrontation reportedly began on Tuesday, October 20, when armed men advanced towards Birnin Tudu from the direction of Bukkuyum. Residents said the attackers arrived on motorcycles and moved through surrounding settlements.

Residents reported that the gunmen opened fire, looted shops and attempted to move livestock stolen from neighbouring communities. The attack occurred while many villagers were working on their farms and harvesting crops.

According to local accounts, more than 59 motorcycles carrying suspected bandits were initially sighted approaching the area. The large movement raised concerns among residents and local security volunteers.

Meanwhile, community defenders mobilised to resist the incursion. Members of the Yan Sakai security network and the CJTF reportedly engaged the attackers.

As the confrontation continued, the air component of Operation Fansan Yamma reportedly supported local defenders. The combined response put pressure on the armed group and forced some fighters to withdraw.

Subsequently, the fleeing gunmen reportedly dispersed towards surrounding forests and rural routes. However, their movements raised concerns about possible renewed attacks on nearby communities.

The reported casualty figures changed as fighting spread across different locations. Initial accounts placed the number of suspected bandits killed at 11. Later reports put the figure above 30, although independent confirmation remains unavailable.

Despite the resistance, residents reported civilian casualties and significant property losses. At least five civilians were reportedly killed in attacks across the affected communities.

In addition, residents said armed men had raided the Tudu and Daki Takwas areas before the latest confrontation. The attackers reportedly rustled about 1,000 cattle and seized motorcycles belonging to residents.

These losses threaten the livelihoods of farming and pastoral households. Furthermore, the violence has heightened fears among residents who travel through isolated routes to reach their farms.

Bello Abubakar, popularly known as Bello Karo Birnin Tudu, appealed to security agencies and the Gummi Local Government Council for additional support.

He said local defenders had received intelligence about the attackers’ movements but lacked enough personnel and equipment to protect every vulnerable entry point.

Consequently, he called for more security personnel, an armoured vehicle, firearms, ammunition and other operational equipment. He also warned of possible reprisal attacks following the reported casualties among the gunmen.

The incident highlights the security challenges facing rural communities in Zamfara State. Although local defenders reportedly repelled the incursion, residents continue to need sustained protection against further attacks.

The reported deaths and other casualty figures remain subject to official confirmation.
