Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, three months after leaving the African Democratic Congress.
Lawal announced his move to the NDC in Abuja on Tuesday. His defection comes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former SGF also declared his support for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. He made the statement after party leaders formally received him into the opposition party.
Lawal said Nigerians concerned about insecurity, hunger, disease and other challenges should support the NDC. He also said he expected the party’s candidates to lead the country from May 29, 2027.
Receiving Lawal, NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson described him as a political mobiliser and activist with extensive experience in Nigerian politics.
Dickson said Lawal would play a leadership role in the party’s activities and campaigns in the North-East. He also said the party expected him to provide guidance to its candidates and campaign structures in the region.
Lawal left the ADC about three months ago after its presidential primary. At the time, he alleged that the process had been manipulated to favour former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The former SGF claimed that results were altered in favour of Atiku and his supporters. He also alleged that some declared winners were replaced after voting had taken place. The allegations formed part of his explanation for leaving the ADC.
His move to the NDC adds another political development ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NDC is preparing for the election with Peter Obi as its presidential candidate and Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate, according to the party’s current structure.
