As rainfall brings cooler temperatures, some people may notice an uncomfortable reaction after bathing with cold water, with itching sometimes beginning almost immediately after leaving the bathroom.
While occasional itching after a bath is often linked to dry skin or irritation, persistent and intense itching following contact with water could, in some cases, be associated with a rare condition known as aquagenic pruritus.
Cold weather and changes in humidity during the rainy season can affect the skin, particularly in people already prone to dryness. Cold water may aggravate the discomfort, while very hot water can also strip the skin of its natural oils and worsen irritation.
The type of reaction, however, is important.
If bathing is followed by redness, swelling, raised patches or other visible skin changes, another skin condition may be responsible. But when intense itching occurs without any obvious rash or change in the appearance of the skin, aquagenic pruritus may be one possible explanation.
Aquagenic pruritus is an uncommon condition in which contact with water causes intense itching or sensations such as prickling, stinging or burning. The water can be at different temperatures, and the discomfort may continue for some time after the person has finished bathing.
Not every case of post-bath itching means a person has aquagenic pruritus.
Dry skin, harsh soaps, prolonged bathing and extreme water temperatures are among the more common causes of itching after bathing. Some people may also experience physical reactions associated with changes in temperature.
For this reason, someone who occasionally experiences mild itching after a cold bath should not automatically conclude that they have a medical disorder.
However, severe, recurrent or unexplained itching should not be ignored.
Doctors may investigate aquagenic pruritus further because the condition can sometimes occur alongside underlying medical problems. It is notably associated with polycythemia vera, a blood disorder characterised by excessive production of blood cells. Associations with other blood disorders and systemic illnesses have also been reported.
This does not mean that every person who experiences itching after bathing has an underlying disease. Rather, persistent or unexplained symptoms may warrant medical assessment.
During an evaluation, a healthcare professional may ask when the itching starts, how long it lasts, whether a rash develops, what type of water triggers the symptoms and whether the person experiences other symptoms.
Simple changes in bathing habits may help when the problem is related to ordinary skin dryness or irritation. Using comfortably warm water rather than very hot or very cold water, keeping baths relatively short, avoiding harsh soaps and applying a suitable moisturiser after bathing can help protect the skin.
But if severe itching occurs repeatedly whenever the skin comes into contact with water, particularly when the skin looks completely normal, seeking medical advice is advisable.
For many people, itching after a cold bath during the rainy season may simply be the result of dry or irritated skin.
For others, however, recurring water-triggered itching may require further investigation.
The key distinction is therefore not simply whether the skin itches after bathing, but how severe, persistent and reproducible the reaction is—and whether any visible skin changes accompany it.
