The US military trains Nigerian forces in unmanned aircraft systems and combat casualty care in Bauchi State. The training forms part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced the training on August 24, 2026, US and Nigerian forces are taking part in the programme at Operating Location Bauchi.
The training includes the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), AFRICOM said about 10 members of the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces Regiment took part in the UAS training.
US Army Sgt. Mark Murphy led the training session.
The programme started with classroom instruction.
The Nigerian personnel then moved to practical exercises.
They learned how to operate the unmanned aircraft.
They also learned how to use information from the system during military operations.
The training gives Nigerian personnel practical experience with UAS technology.
It also supports greater cooperation between Nigerian and US forces.
The programme goes beyond drone operations.
US personnel also train Nigerian forces in Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care.
The sessions cover basic skills that can help personnel respond to injuries during military operations.
The wider training programme also includes weapons familiarisation.
Other areas include camouflage and small-unit tactics.
Personnel also receive training in water treatment and testing.
Explosive ordnance disposal forms part of the programme as well.
The training reflects the growing security relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
Both countries continue to work together on military readiness and security challenges.
AFRICOM said the partnership includes training, advising, intelligence sharing and professional exchanges.
The activities also help both forces improve their ability to work together.
US and Nigerian personnel can share knowledge during the exercises.
They can also build stronger professional relationships.
Nigeria continues to face several security challenges.
These challenges require better intelligence and faster responses.
UAS technology can help security forces gather information from the air.
It can also support surveillance and operational planning.
Training Nigerian personnel in the technology can therefore improve local skills.
However, AFRICOM did not announce a new US supply of armed drones to Nigeria.
The report confirms training in unmanned aircraft systems.
It does not confirm a transfer of armed drones.
This distinction is important when reporting the development.
The US military training also gives Nigerian personnel access to practical knowledge.
The Nigerian forces can apply these skills during future operations.
The two countries can also identify other areas for joint training.
AFRICOM said both sides continue to explore additional training opportunities in Bauchi.
The latest exercise therefore strengthens the existing US-Nigeria security partnership.
It also focuses on military skills, operational readiness and knowledge sharing.
