Hull City produced one of the biggest surprises of the Premier League opening weekend, defeating Manchester United 2-0 in a result that immediately raises questions about the visitors’ defensive strength.

Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute after United failed to properly clear a dangerous corner. Ajayi reacted quickest amid the confusion inside the box, firing home to give Hull an early advantage.

Manchester United struggled to respond and were punished again before the break. Nobel Mendy doubled Hull’s lead with a powerful header from a free-kick, leaving United’s defence exposed once more from a set-piece situation.

The hosts remained organised after the interval, while United found it difficult to create clear opportunities despite having periods of possession. Hull ultimately held on comfortably to secure a memorable victory in their first Premier League match of the season.

For Ajayi, the goal provided a particularly significant moment as the Nigerian international helped Hull claim three points against one of English football’s biggest clubs.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick urged supporters not to overreact to the defeat, insisting that one game should not determine the direction of the team.

The result, however, gives Carrick plenty to address, especially after United conceded twice from set pieces.

For Hull, it was a dream start to the campaign and a statement victory that will give the newly promoted side plenty of confidence heading into their next fixture.
