Barrister Zainab M. Salisu has said democracy can only thrive when citizens respect the rule of law, actively participate in democratic processes and hold elected leaders accountable through lawful and peaceful means.
Salisu made the remarks while appearing as a guest on S24 TV’s Political Arena, where she discussed the responsibilities of citizens, access to justice, democratic participation and the expectations of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to her, democracy is not solely the responsibility of elected officials, arguing that citizens also have an important role to play in protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that government remains accountable to the people.
She urged Nigerians to understand their rights and responsibilities under the law, stressing that citizens should pursue lawful channels whenever their rights are violated or they feel aggrieved.
Salisu also challenged what she described as the growing perception among some members of the public that justice is primarily available to people who can afford to pay for it.
She explained that there are legal services provided on a pro bono basis, particularly for individuals who may be unable to afford legal representation.
The lawyer therefore encouraged citizens who feel aggrieved or believe their rights have been violated to seek legal redress rather than resorting to self-help, confrontation or violence.
She said citizens should make better use of existing legal and judicial mechanisms to resolve disputes and demand accountability.
According to Salisu, strengthening democracy requires citizens to move beyond complaining about poor governance and become actively involved in democratic processes.
She called for increased participation in elections, constructive engagement with public officials and sustained efforts to hold leaders accountable in accordance with the law.
“Democracy thrives when citizens respect the rule of law,” she maintained, stressing that citizens must also understand that democratic rights come with corresponding responsibilities.
The lawyer further cautioned against violence and other unlawful actions, particularly in the context of political disagreements and electoral competition.
She argued that political differences should be addressed through dialogue, legal institutions and democratic processes rather than confrontation.
On the 2027 general elections, Salisu urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and pay close attention to developments before, during and after the elections.
She called on citizens to actively participate in the electoral process and contribute to ensuring that the 2027 elections are credible, peaceful and successful.
She also urged political leaders and other stakeholders to play their part by creating an environment conducive to free, fair and peaceful elections.
According to her, the responsibility for a successful electoral process cannot rest entirely on citizens, as political leaders and institutions must also demonstrate commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
Salisu stressed the need for Nigerians to demand accountability from their leaders through legitimate democratic mechanisms while avoiding actions capable of undermining peace and stability.
She maintained that a strong democracy requires the collective commitment of citizens, political leaders, security agencies, electoral institutions and other stakeholders.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, she urged citizens to remain informed, participate responsibly and use lawful mechanisms to protect their rights and demand better governance.
She further called on political leaders to “do the needful” by respecting democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law and ensuring that citizens are allowed to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or violence.
Her comments come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders increasingly calling for greater citizen participation, electoral accountability and peaceful political engagement.
Salisu’s position underscores the importance of both citizens and leaders in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system, particularly as the country approaches another major electoral cycle.
