Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the WAFU B U20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
The defeat was particularly disappointing for Nigeria, as it followed a similar pattern to their earlier group-stage meeting with Burkina Faso, where the West Africans also exposed weaknesses in the Flying Eagles’ defence.
Coach Abdul Maikaba and his players failed to find solutions to Burkina Faso’s set-piece threat, conceding again from a corner kick and a free-kick. The repeated vulnerability from dead-ball situations proved costly as Burkina Faso took control of the final.
The Flying Eagles struggled to establish sustained attacking pressure and found themselves chasing the game for long periods, while Burkina Faso displayed greater composure and efficiency in key areas.
The result is a major setback for Nigeria, who needed to win the WAFU B U20 Championship to secure qualification for the U20 AFCON. Instead, Burkina Faso claimed the title and secured their place at the continental tournament, while Nigeria will miss out.
The defeat also raises questions about the Flying Eagles’ defensive organisation, tactical preparation and ability to adapt against familiar opposition.
For Burkina Faso, it was a deserved victory and a statement performance on the biggest stage of the tournament.
