Nigeria’s democratic future depends not only on those in government but also on the willingness of young people to participate in leadership, civic engagement, and nation-building, a message that took centre stage at the National Leaders and Youth Stakeholders Conference 2026 held in Abuja.
The conference, which took place on July 30 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together government officials, youth leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to discuss how young Nigerians can play a more active role in strengthening democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Held under the theme, “General Election: From Voices to Votes; Process, Participation, Security and National Stability Beyond 2027,” the event focused on improving Nigeria’s electoral process, promoting peaceful participation, enhancing election security, and building long-term national stability.
Speakers throughout the conference stressed that young Nigerians must move beyond being voters and become active participants in governance, policymaking, and democratic reforms.
They noted that meaningful youth involvement would strengthen democratic institutions, encourage accountability, and contribute to sustainable national development.
Participants also urged young people to become more engaged in civic activities, public service, and leadership positions rather than remaining on the sidelines of national conversations.
A recurring message during the conference was the importance of cooperation among government institutions, civil society organisations, community leaders, and young people.
Speakers said lasting democratic progress can only be achieved when all stakeholders work together to promote peaceful elections, inclusive governance, and national unity.
They added that continuous dialogue between leaders and citizens remains essential for building trust and ensuring democratic stability beyond the 2027 elections.
Former Kano State Commissioner, Umma Getso, encouraged young Nigerians to become agents of positive change instead of focusing only on the country’s challenges.
She noted that young people make up nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population and therefore possess the numbers and energy needed to shape the country’s future.
According to her, meaningful change will come when young Nigerians organise themselves, participate actively, and contribute practical solutions to national issues.
One of the major highlights of the conference was an address by Zainab Buba Galadima, who shared her personal story of resilience, determination, and courage.
Her presentation encouraged many participants, particularly young women, to pursue careers in politics, leadership, and public service despite the challenges they may encounter.
Many attendees described her remarks as a source of inspiration and a reminder that determination can open doors to leadership opportunities.
The conference also celebrated young Nigerians who have made significant contributions in leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community development.
Organisers presented awards to recognise their achievements while encouraging more young people to contribute positively to society and national development.
They said recognising excellence among young Nigerians would motivate others to pursue impactful initiatives within their communities.
Convener of the conference, Ambassador Jeremiah Agala, explained that the event was organised to strengthen communication between national leaders and young Nigerians.
He said the platform was designed to encourage greater youth participation in decision-making while promoting partnerships that would support Nigeria’s democratic development.
According to him, creating opportunities for dialogue between leaders and young citizens is essential for building an inclusive and prosperous nation.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections continue, participants agreed that empowering young people must remain a national priority.
They said stronger democratic institutions, peaceful elections, and active civic participation will require sustained collaboration among government, civil society, and the country’s growing youth population.
The National Leaders and Youth Stakeholders Conference 2026 concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening democracy, expanding youth participation, and building a more stable and inclusive Nigeria beyond 2027.
