Defence Headquarters has ordered the deployment of intelligence assets following the abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife in Katsina State.

The former Director of Defence Information and his wife were reportedly kidnapped by suspected terrorists along the Karaduwa-Matazu Road in Matazu Local Government Area on Saturday.

A senior military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that troops are working continuously to secure the release of the victims. The officer declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the operation.

The Katsina State Police Command has also stepped-up efforts to rescue the victims. Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage visited the scene of the incident and ordered the deployment of additional personnel and resources to support the search operation.

According to a police statement, the attack took place at about 11:00 am when armed men intercepted a red Peugeot 406 saloon car travelling along the road.

The vehicle’s driver, identified as Abdullahi Sa’id, suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm during the attack. Police said two occupants were abducted before security personnel arrived at the scene.

Officers from the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters and members of the anti-crime unit responded quickly, secured the area and arranged medical treatment for the injured driver.

Major General Abubakar, who previously served as the military’s spokesperson, played a significant role in communicating the activities of the Nigerian Armed Forces during his years in service.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the security challenges facing parts of the country despite ongoing military operations against armed criminal groups. Authorities say efforts remain focused on rescuing the victims safely and arresting those responsible for the attack.
