Panic In South Africa As FG Prepares To Bring Nigerians Home

The Nigerian government has begun arrangements for the voluntary evacuation of citizens from South Africa following renewed anti-foreigner protests and xenophobic tensions in parts of the country.

Officials confirmed that more than 130 Nigerians have already registered to return home amid growing concerns about safety.

The protests have been reported in cities including Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban, where demonstrations against undocumented migration have increased in recent weeks.

Some foreign nationals and business owners were advised to remain indoors during planned marches and protests.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said the evacuation exercise is voluntary and forms part of wider efforts to protect Nigerians abroad.

She added that the number of people seeking repatriation is expected to increase as tensions continue.

President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigerian missions in South Africa to closely monitor developments and assist affected citizens.

Nigerian diplomatic officials are also engaging South African authorities to improve security and reduce risks to Nigerians living there.

South African authorities have condemned attacks on foreign nationals and pledged to strengthen security measures in affected communities.

Several African countries, including Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, have also warned their citizens in South Africa to remain vigilant amid fears of further violence.

The renewed unrest has again raised concerns about recurring xenophobic violence in South Africa, where migrants are often blamed for unemployment, crime, and pressure on public services.

Rights groups and regional observers have called for stronger cooperation among African governments to prevent further attacks and protect migrants across the continent.
