French President Emmanuel Macron has dismissed mocking remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump about his marriage, describing them as “neither elegant nor up to standard.”
Trump reportedly made the comments during a private lunch on Wednesday, where he criticised NATO allies over their stance on the Iran conflict. According to accounts from the meeting, the U.S. president mimicked a French accent and joked about Macron’s relationship with his wife, Brigitte, drawing criticism for the tone of the remarks.
Speaking to reporters during an official visit to Seoul on Thursday, Macron declined to engage with the comments, saying they did not merit a response. Instead, he emphasised the need for global focus on de-escalation in the Middle East and efforts toward a ceasefire, stressing that “this isn’t a show” but a moment requiring stability and a return to peace.
