A former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof Usman Yusuf, has condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, calling it illegal and unjust.

Prof Yusuf spoke on DCL Hausa, where he raised concerns about what he described as a prolonged and unlawful detention. He said El-Rufai is facing serious health challenges and needs urgent medical care.

“Keeping him in detention under such critical medical conditions is not only unjust but inhumane,” he said.

He urged the government to release El-Rufai immediately, warning that continued detention could worsen his condition.

Prof Yusuf added that he and others may escalate the issue if the situation continues. According to him, they could file formal complaints and seek international support to draw global attention.

He also cautioned the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) against political interference.

“Public institutions must not become tools for political witch-hunts. Many of these arrests are politically motivated,” he said.

The development has intensified debates over the use of anti-corruption agencies and concerns about the rule of law and human rights in Nigeria.
