The Federal Government says the gains recorded from its ongoing economic reforms must translate into better living conditions, jobs and wider economic opportunities for Nigerians.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, stated this on Thursday in Abuja during a World Press Conference marking the commencement of activities for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Akume said the government had entered a phase of consolidating the gains of reforms implemented since 2023, stressing that the ultimate measure of the reforms would be their impact on ordinary Nigerians.
“The task before us today, as leaders and citizens, is consolidation. We must ensure that the gains from reform translate into better opportunities for ordinary Nigerians,” Akume said.
He said the administration’s reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, were aimed at restoring fiscal stability, attracting investment and creating the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
According to him, the government is now focusing on revenue mobilisation, stronger public finances, increased investment and measures designed to expand economic opportunities.
Akume said the next phase must produce tangible benefits, including more jobs, higher incomes, improved access to education and credit, lower costs and broader opportunities for Nigerians.
He added that the Federal Government was implementing interventions in infrastructure, agriculture, education, consumer credit, digital skills, energy and enterprise as part of efforts to translate economic stability into shared prosperity.
The SGF also stressed the need to protect vulnerable Nigerians while pursuing economic reforms, saying those struggling with poverty must not be left behind.
The Federal Government’s position comes as it prepares to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary under the theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.”
