The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned reported sexual assaults at a festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

The association described the incident as a serious violation of human rights and a national disgrace.

In a statement, NBA President Afam Osigwe said the acts amount to gender-based violence.

He stated that no cultural practice can justify the humiliation or abuse of women in public spaces.

The NBA said the reported incidents involved physical assault, harassment and degrading treatment of women.

It noted that such actions violate constitutional rights to dignity, liberty and personal security.

The association called on Delta State authorities and law enforcement agencies to act immediately.

It urged security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute all individuals involved in the incident.

The NBA also said those who enabled or failed to intervene should be held accountable.

It warned that silence or delay in justice could encourage further acts of violence.

The association called on community leaders and festival organisers to ensure safety during public events.

It stressed that cultural celebrations must reflect dignity, order and respect for human rights.

The NBA reaffirmed that protecting women is both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility.

It urged authorities to ensure such incidents do not occur again.
