The Federal Government has officially begun implementing a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective January 1, 2026.
The move follows the 2025 renegotiated agreement aimed at stabilizing the public university system and improving staff morale.
Dr. Maruf Alausa Minister of Education confirmed that several federal universities have already integrated the increase into their payrolls.
The Ministry is currently ensuring uniform implementation across all federal institutions to guarantee all eligible staff benefit.
Meanwhile Vice-Chancellors have been directed to implement the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) using guidelines from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC).
The payment is formally captured in the 2026 budget, reflecting President Tinubu’s commitment to industrial harmony in the education sector.
After failed attempts by previous committees Babalakin, Jibrin, and Briggs, a breakthrough was reached via the Yayale Ahmed Committee inaugurated in October 2024.
The resulting agreement focuses on reversing sectoral decline and “brain drain” through significant structural reforms.
first time, the government has introduced a dedicated annual allowance for:
Full Professors with a salary of ₦1.74m per annum while
Readers earn ₦840,000 per annum.
