The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has said he would be willing to negotiate with bandits who genuinely seek peace if elected president in 2027.
Obi stated that dialogue would be considered as part of efforts to restore security and unity in Nigeria, stressing that anyone willing to abandon violence and embrace peace should be engaged.
He, however, maintained that those who choose violence and continue to threaten the lives and property of Nigerians would face decisive action from his administration.
The former Anambra State governor has made insecurity one of the major issues in his political messaging ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He has repeatedly promised to adopt stronger measures to tackle terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities affecting communities across the country.
Obi’s comments come amid ongoing national debate over whether the government should negotiate with armed groups involved in banditry and other security challenges.
Security experts and political actors have expressed different views on the strategy, with some arguing that dialogue can help end conflicts when armed groups are willing to surrender, while others warn that negotiations without accountability could encourage further criminal activities.
The former governor also continues to position himself for the 2027 presidential race, saying he remains committed to offering Nigerians an alternative leadership approach focused on security, economic development, and improved governance. (Daily Trust)
