Team Nigeria will leave Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday, October 29, ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, as Nigeria Olympic Committee President Habu Gumel urges the young athletes to shun doping and misconduct.

The Games will run from October 31 to November 13, marking the first time an Olympic sporting event will take place on African soil.

Nigeria will compete in six sports: athletics, boxing, swimming, road cycling, table tennis and beach volleyball. A total of 19 athletes will represent the country at the international competition.

Gumel issued the warning on Tuesday during the formal handover of the Nigerian contingent. He urged the athletes to reject prohibited substances, maintain discipline and protect Nigeria’s image throughout the competition.

He also assured the team of the committee’s support as they prepare to compete against young athletes from around the world.

The contingent has completed its preparations, including medical screening, technical training and anti-doping education, ahead of the trip to Senegal.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission has announced cash rewards to motivate Nigerian athletes who win medals at the Games. Gold medallists will receive $3,000, while silver medallists will earn $2,500 and bronze medallists $2,000.

With preparations complete, Team Nigeria will aim to win medals in Dakar while gaining valuable international experience to support their development and future participation in senior-level competitions.
