Ryan Garcia will defend his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn on Saturday, September 12, in a highly anticipated showdown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Garcia enters the fight with a professional record of 25 wins, two losses and 20 knockouts, while Benn boasts a 25-1 record with 14 knockouts. The American won the WBC title in February with a unanimous-decision victory over Mario Barrios.
For Benn, the contest represents his first opportunity to become a world champion. The 29-year-old secured his title shot after defeating former world champion Regis Prograis by unanimous decision in April.
However, the biggest storyline heading into Saturday’s fight has been Benn’s return to the 147-pound welterweight limit.
Benn has not fought at welterweight since April 2022 and has competed at significantly heavier weights in recent years. He has admitted that getting back to 147 pounds has been extremely difficult, describing the process as brutal.
He has also confirmed that the Garcia fight will be his final appearance at welterweight before moving back up the divisions.
That weight cut could prove decisive against Garcia, whose biggest strengths include explosive hand speed and a powerful left hook.
Garcia, meanwhile, is looking to strengthen his position among boxing’s elite with a successful first title defence. The champion has also made it clear that he expects to exploit any weakness caused by Benn’s demanding cut.
The fight has already produced plenty of tension outside the ring, with the rivalry escalating during fight week and Dana White stepping in to separate the two fighters during a heated face-off.
With Garcia’s championship status and Benn’s first world-title opportunity at stake, Saturday’s clash promises to be a defining night for both fighters.
